How has your lifestyle changed?
Jennifer: I’m active again. I feel good running up the steps! I can play with my two-year-old and wear her out at the playground. I exercise with my older children and inspire them to be the best versions of themselves, because I am testimony that it can be done.
My daily routine starts with stretching, taking a ten-minute walk, and then tackling my workday with no pain, no fuss and a lot of energy.
Laura: Three months after surgery, I got a new job. A year after, moving my body started to feel like gliding instead of trudging, and I began to enjoy long walks, which led to taking a photography class. I also fell in love with clothing in a deeper way. Four years after, I started to pursue my master of social work (MSW) degree as part of a career change. During this time, I’ve studied the complexity of recovery after bariatric surgery, and I’d love to work with bariatric patients someday.
Jamie: I have learned how to maintain a healthy, balanced diet, which also helps my family, because they eat a lot healthier now too. I’m able to teach my son about nutritious meals and snacks. I also have a lot more confidence when I go out. It feels good to get dressed up, have people look at me and smile.
